We’ve been to the Zoo!   Leave a comment

What an exhausting day.  Up at 6.30 to move our gear to a new hostel and then at 9.00 we hit Beijing Zoo.  First impressions were that the place was very well landscaped, however it is obvious that money is tight.  We paid the eqivalent of only £2.00 entry fee.  The sums don’t add up on doing a proper job of maintaining it, however the average  Chinese person is poorer than a westerner so hiking the admission fee would be counter productive. Most of the animal houses were straight out of a 60/70’s arcitechyre manual.  Animal keepers were none existant too.  It was evident that the animals had been fed.  The highlights for me were the big cats especially the Benagal white tiger, the leemurs, the beluga whales, the jelly fish and of course the panda.  But again for such hype about the panda centre, it wasn’t great.  The Aquarium was, in contrast, very modern and superbly put together. However when you have seen most of the fish, sea turtles, dolphins, wrays and eels at very close quarters while scuba diving at 30 metres they loose some of there wow factor behind glass.   Big gallery below for this one folks.  Some of the pictures are grainy due to light levels and the best I could do in post production.
