Australia Day.   Leave a comment

26th January is Australia Day…..or should that be Invasion Day.

The date commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788 and the proclamation at that time of British sovereignty over the eastern seaboard of New Holland.  It’s a day when Australians wear their flag in a variety of interesting ways.  You can buy, t shirts, towels, neoprene beer bottle coolers, car flags and my personal favourite (I did see a few girls in these) bakinis.

We have already established that the Australia folk are a laid back bunch. On Australia Day they are practically comatose. Kerry and I spent some time today in Feberation Square observing people enjoy their public holiday. Interestingly I refered to Australia Day as a bank holiday to a few Aussies. I got the funniest looks of our whole trip. I had to spend 10 minutes explaining what I meant. Most of the public spaces in Melbourne have giant TV screens, all of which show the Tennis Open. With cheers, boos and rrrrs heard wherever you go. They love their tennis the Aussies.

Whilst in Federation Square I captured this video of the day. Click here and wait for the clip to load.

Friendly catch ups.   Leave a comment

We have been in Melbourne for just over a week and already have had the chance to meet up with friends. Last Sunday we met up with Donna and Ben who we met on our China tour back in August. It was great seeing how they got on in Japan, after we left them in Hong Kong. They gave us a great tip for a place to stay, which we are now safely installed in…..More to follow on that.

Last night we met up with Mark. We met Mark in the Sychelles last February. At the time he was working at the dive centre we dived at. He was studying to be a Divemaster. We shared our DM experiences and best places to Dive in this area of the world. We thoughly recommended the Yongala in Queensland and Nha Trang in Vietnam. He Fiji and the chilly dive sites around Melbourne.

It’s true. Travel isn’t just about the sights, it’s about the people you meet too.

Chelsea   1 comment

During our time in Townsville we shared a house with Alana.  We couldn’t have had a better house mate.  She was brilliant.  She often offered her car for us to get to places, watched Merlin with us, gave us space to do our own thing and we did likewise.  She was and still is just plain cool.  Alana has a dog called Chelsea.  A bullmastiff/ridgeback cross who is one year old.  We were very kindly allowed to take Chelsea for walks on the nearby beach.  Now Chelsea isn’t like ordinary dogs.  When you throw a ball she takes some persuasion to actually go and fetch it.  She then takes even more encouragement to bring the ball back to you and you practically have to beg her to actually let go of it.

I captured these pictures on one of our early beach trips.  Now we are in the cooler Melbourne it’s bringing all the memories back of the blinking heat of Queensland!

Early learning for life.   Leave a comment

Kerry came across this yesterday and although it isn’t technically travel related some of the lessons, tongue in cheek, could and have helped us along the way.
