History…at last!!!   Leave a comment

While orientating ourselves with Melbourne today we stumbled across the State Library of Victoria. What a cool building it is with its stone frontage, majestic domed centre reading room, called the La Trobe Reading and brilliant exhibitions. Somehow we got lost in what Terry Pratchet calls L space for 2 1/2 hours.  Some of that time was reading and looking at the pictures in a book by Frank Hurley.  He accompanied Ernest Shackleton on his ill fated expedition to the South Pole, grandly called the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition 1914–17 (I’m a bit of a fan of Shackleton’s can you tell?)

I haven’t been in a library for ages.  It really highlighted to me how far we have developed with computers.  Each reading room was full of folks doing research and making notes on laptops and tablets.  It was good to smell old books though.  An unbeatable and timeless smell.

Here’s a link to some info on the library.

Total camera balls up today.  I didn’t have my wide-angle lens, for the La Trobe Reading Room and sorry for the drop in picture quality. My camera battery died part way though.  Camera phone v Canon 5D mark 2…..no contest.
