Australia Day.   Leave a comment

26th January is Australia Day…..or should that be Invasion Day.

The date commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788 and the proclamation at that time of British sovereignty over the eastern seaboard of New Holland.  It’s a day when Australians wear their flag in a variety of interesting ways.  You can buy, t shirts, towels, neoprene beer bottle coolers, car flags and my personal favourite (I did see a few girls in these) bakinis.

We have already established that the Australia folk are a laid back bunch. On Australia Day they are practically comatose. Kerry and I spent some time today in Feberation Square observing people enjoy their public holiday. Interestingly I refered to Australia Day as a bank holiday to a few Aussies. I got the funniest looks of our whole trip. I had to spend 10 minutes explaining what I meant. Most of the public spaces in Melbourne have giant TV screens, all of which show the Tennis Open. With cheers, boos and rrrrs heard wherever you go. They love their tennis the Aussies.

Whilst in Federation Square I captured this video of the day. Click here and wait for the clip to load.
