May 2011 – 12 by 12   Leave a comment

The month our lives changed beyond all recognition. On the 1st May we left our home in Nottingham and drove to Jersey via Weymouth. We spent the next 2 weeks getting ready for the off. We completed the work on the Land Rover, packed our kit and had lots of lovely dinners courtesy of David’s mum. We left for France on 16th – the start of our European adventure. We had a 2 week whistle stop tour visiting Mont Saint-Michel and the Somme in France, Berlin and Dresden in Germany, Luxembourg, Poland, the Baltic’s and Finland. On the way we danced in a swimming pool, got disgracefully drunk in Riga and felt the horrors of Auschwitz.  We had our first experience of  Wild Camping and over landing in a Land Rover.

Berlin Gallery.   Leave a comment

Here’s my collection of pictures from our Berlin visit.  We found a really random campsite on the edge of the city.  It had an abandoned outdoor swimming pool which on one night of our stay held a dance.  The site was such a photographic find especially with the dancers.

So much amazing architecture to see.  And of course all the stuff relating to the Berlin wall.  The final image  on this post of the modern theatre is my favourite.

Colditz Castle, Germany visit   Leave a comment

Pictures from our visit to Colditz Castle in Germany.  Alledgedly the most secure camp of the German Army.  This was the camp prisoners were sent, who kept escaping from other camps.  This one didn’t stop them either.  A few got away from here too!  However the Germans gave them alot of respect for their efforts.  Both sides almost saw it as a game.  They were expected to keep trying.  After a failed attempt the German camp photographer too a snap of them.

Here’s some more info on the place and my pics.

Berlin   Leave a comment

What a beautiful vibrant city! Ok there was what looked like a huge football match on the day of our visit which swelled the crowds. Did a whistle stop tour of the city to Brandenburg Gates, the last remains of the Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie. The latter disappointed me. Two guys where stood at the checkpoint dressed in 60’s style American Uniforms and holding American flags. But between posing for photographs they kept playing with thirty mobile phones! Kerry struggled to get her head around the Berlin Wall concept and kept asking “why?” Yea why indeed. As one of my pictures illustrates…madness.

Day 7   Leave a comment

Wow. Day 7 of our trip. We have already travelled through France, Belgium, Luxemburg and are currently residing in Berlin Germany. We have seen a magnificent citadel, wild camped in the woods down the road from Colditz Castle (after visiting the castle), made a sombre visit to the Somme, seen the remains of the Berlin wall and travelled on the Berlin Underground. I have loads of photos to show you folks but I need a decent internet connection to upload them! Tomorrow we crack on and head into Poland…More WW2 sites to visit while we are there.
