Melbourne at night   1 comment

Melbourne looks stunning at night time. Everywhere you look is another great photo waiting to be taken.  My night time shoot coincided with a visit to Melbourne by Alana, our house mate in Townsville, Queensland, while we were doing our Divemaster training.  She was in town to see our very own legendary David Attenborough give a talk and the fabulous Regal Theatre.  It was great to catch up and show Alana some of Altona while she was staying with us.

Back to the shoot.  With a few shots taken with Alana with us, Kerry and I disappeared into the City, while Alana was at the show.  Now  I wish I had done this shoot in the summer when it was warmer.  Kerry and I were freezing.  It was also blowing a gale unfortunately making some of my images unusable (not noticed until I got home) until I tweaked my camera settings.

We managed to spot a possum while down near the river.  Being a Brit I just thought it was a cat at first until Alana put us right.

Skydeck   1 comment

For Kerry’s birthday we decided to experience the Skydeck (here’s a link to more infomation). The Skydeck is situated in the tallest building, measuring 297.30 metres, in Melbourne. It dominates the skyline. We travelled (at an ear popping 9 metres per second) to the 88th floor for some truly breathtaking views of the city and well beyond, from out vantage point at 285 metres. Clearly visible where many of the places we have already visited; The Tennis Centre, Royal Botanical Gardens, Central Shopping Mall with its districtive glass cone, Australian Centre for Moving Images, Federation Square and The Shrine of Rememberence. We could also see Willamstown, Yarraville and Altona. Every now and again up there you had to steady yourself as the structure moved ever so slightly in the wind. It was well worth the money.

Meet up   Leave a comment

Kerry and I had a great afternoon meeting a bunch of new people at a meet up in Melborne. Meet up are a world wide organisation designed for social events along a particular theme. Here’s a link to their website for more information. Out meet up was in the Royal Botanical Gardens which we last visited in January, when it was summer. And involved a walk around the gardens, partly with a guide pointing out interesting stuff and partly just chatting and getting to know new people. Despite the winter season the warmer climate meant that many more of the trees had leaves on than I expected.

Sunlight   1 comment

More Melbourne photographs.  This time a big oldish church we found on the outskirts of the city centre.  We arrived just at the time of the day when the sun we streaming through the windows giving the interior a fantastic golden glow.

Parliament   Leave a comment

This was a cool visit on one of our trips into Melbourne City.  It wa sa short tour, but free so I can hardly complain.

The parliament building is split into two halves.  One is the Victorian Legislative Council, called the upper house.  The other is the Victorian Legislative Assembly the lower house.  One chamber has plush velvet seating the other plush leather.  The decorative detail of each chamber with gilt work was amazing.

Here’s some more info on the building.

Melbourne in Black and White   3 comments

Melbourne is a colourful and vibrant city. However every now and again it’s nice to show it slightly differently. Here are a collection of images I’ve taken over the last few months of Melborve in black and white. I would like to mention the folks practicing their balance on a metal bar on the south bank. They were fantastic. Maybe they were practicing for a Niagra Falls attempt?
