May 2011 – 12 by 12   Leave a comment

The month our lives changed beyond all recognition. On the 1st May we left our home in Nottingham and drove to Jersey via Weymouth. We spent the next 2 weeks getting ready for the off. We completed the work on the Land Rover, packed our kit and had lots of lovely dinners courtesy of David’s mum. We left for France on 16th – the start of our European adventure. We had a 2 week whistle stop tour visiting Mont Saint-Michel and the Somme in France, Berlin and Dresden in Germany, Luxembourg, Poland, the Baltic’s and Finland. On the way we danced in a swimming pool, got disgracefully drunk in Riga and felt the horrors of Auschwitz.  We had our first experience of  Wild Camping and over landing in a Land Rover.

Day** on the road….well how many do you think it is?….No peeping below this title!   Leave a comment

Unbelievably we have been on the road for 50 days!

So much as happened.  It feels like 500 days since we packed our belongings in storage, said goodbye to our friends/families, completed on our house sale and I handed my brilliant company car back :-(.  It’s already difficult to remember the day to dayness of life.

You can see from my and Kerry’s posts we have been many brilliant places and seen many amazing sights.  There is so many more yet to come over the next 280+ days.

The Trans Siberian Railway trip
China (hopefully)
Cambodia
Vietnam
Loas
Thailand
Malysia
Hong Kong (hopefully)
Singapore
Australia
And maybe Hobbitdom (New Zealand)

All to come. It’s nice to see from the blog stats that my friends are reading my posts. To put things into perspective, the best day for site views so far is 90 hits on 27 June, followed by 61 on 31 May. Stay tuned and keep reading folks.

Thank you

Stef

Our final wild campsite   Leave a comment

After our change of circumstances and no longer travelling in the Landrover, this site was our final wild campsite, just outside Saratov.  A great spot to finish, overlooking the Volgograd river.

From now on we will kipping in hostels, overnight trains/buses, station resting rooms and very budget hotels.  I miss our tent and the great sites, but we are meeting so many more people now and getting so many different travel ideas and routes, so it all balances out in the long run.

Beautiful Campsite in Lithuania   Leave a comment

We stumbled across a campsite while travelling through Lithuania that blew me away.  It was a brand new site.  In fact off in the distance some chalets were still being built.  The campsite was beside a huge lake that on the evening we arrived was perfectly still.   The following morning I went for a run around it.  Here’s the pictures I took when we arrived.

Wild Camping   Leave a comment

A large proportion of our trip will involve wild camping. For two reasons, 1. It’s free and 2. In some of the areas we will be traversing there just aren’t any campsites. So far we have camped in a pine forest outside Colditz in Germany, a carpark in Aucshwitz town, by a lake outside Albert in France and a forest close to the Polish/ Latvian boarder. Good camp craft means getting off the beaten track in a forest or gehind a hill well hidden to minimise bother from locals and police. Get up early and get the tents down quick in case we need to make a sharpish exit. So far my favourite spot was Colditz. It was miles from the road and I saw a deer. As I write this we are in the polish woods. I’m huddled down in my sleeping bag. We are nearish to a dual carriageway so I can hear the cars much more. 7 start in the morning to make for Latvia. It’s not all luxary, fine wine and cheese this overlanding you know. Good night.
